<p>Sixty per cent of the world&#8217;s population are faced with the same, at least very similar, challenges as you.</p>
<p>That means that AT LEAST 6 of every 10 people in your immediate circle would almost certainly welcome a boost (translates loosely to a &#8220;kick in the pants&#8221;) to help them achieve their own goals.</p>
<p>Recent New Year&#8217;s resolutions are still fresh enough in people&#8217;s minds to stir up some reactions&#8230;.(guilt alone can be a great motivator). Ask me how I know.</p>
<p>Tell everyone you know about your determination to, this time, really live up to your own resolutions. The &#8220;hows and whys&#8221; can come later in the dialogue.</p>
<p>Share with these potential &#8220;health buddies&#8221; the fact that you are concerned, because you are starting to find it easier and easier to &#8220;skip a day&#8221;.</p>
<p>The &#8220;hectic schedule&#8221; excuses, coupled with the fact that there are just so many daily &#8220;calorie temptations&#8221;, have you a bit worried.  And no matter how true you are being to your diet and exercise routine, at this point  it&#8217;s really important to truly look and sound as worried as you can.</p>
<p>Most people will welcome the opportunity to &#8220;help&#8221;; especially the people who truly care about you. (One unexpected benefit of using this method is that you will find out in a hurry who your true friends are.) Forget the &#8220;nay-sayers&#8221; and move along.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t be surprised if and when a number of your friends offer to help you by joining you at the table and at the gym, or the walk around the block or the aerobics in front of the TV&#8230;..whatever path you choose to follow.</p>
<p>Talk about a win-win situation. You started out by asking for help; and may well end up being &#8220;just what the doctor ordered&#8221; for an entire group of soon-to-be healthy friends and family.</p>
<p>As much as I would like to take all the credit, I do have to admit that the true inspiration for our own commitment, as well as for the team building concept came from none other than the best selling author, Tom Venuto. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Let&#8217;s begin by considering what has been the weight control mantra for decades: EAT LESS&#8230;.EXERCISE MORE.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s clean, compact, easy to say, easy to remember, and easy to commit to first thing every morning. As long as you remain in bed, everything is fine. As soon as your feet hit the floor, and your day begins for real, the struggle begins.</p>
<p>You find yourself already behind schedule; or you&#8217;re just too lazy to prepare a proper breakfast, even though you KNOW it is the most important meal of the day. Good thing there are a few pastries in the cupboard, huh?</p>
<p>You delude yourself into thinking that since the pastry was rather small, you&#8217;ve just had a &#8220;light&#8221; breakfast. (So far you are &#8220;EATING LESS&#8221;; and you promise yourself that you&#8217;ll get to the gym later in the day and really &#8220;EXERCISE MORE&#8221;.</p>
<p>The caffeine and sugar combine to give you a sufficient &#8220;buzz&#8221; to get you started&#8230;either off to work, or as far as finding the remote and settling down on the couch with only minutes to spare. (Before Jeopardy comes on)</p>
<p>You&#8217;re not crazy about your job, and today is more stressful that usual; or, JEOPARDY turns out to be one that you&#8217;ve already seen seven times. By now, your &#8220;pseudo-breakfast buzz&#8221; is wearing off, and now you are really, really hungry; but it&#8217;s still an hour and a half till lunch.  So maybe just a &#8220;light snack&#8221; to carry you through.</p>
<p>Four or five hundred empty calories later, you&#8217;re feeling a bit better; and yes, you are still &#8220;EATING LESS&#8221;. And you promise to &#8220;EXERCISE MORE&#8221; by expanding this afternoon&#8217;s workout to include an extra fifteen minutes on the treadmill.</p>
<p>Can you see where this is going?</p>
<p>Although it may remain true, on the surface, that you are &#8220;eating less&#8221;, the reality is that you are actually eating more, lots more&#8230;empty calories from nutritionaly empty semi-food junk.</p>
<p>Couple this with the reality of most non-exercise days. How many times out of 10 does something come up which prevents you from getting anywhere close to the exercise you promised upon awakening?</p>
<p>Before you know it, it&#8217;s bedtime; and since your evening meal probably consisted of some totally unsatisfying, pre-packaged nightmare, you are starving for the traditional bed-time snack. (But just a &#8220;little&#8221; one.  RIGHT!?)</p>
<p>End Result: If you&#8217;re not obese&#8230;you are probably still in your teens.</p>

<p>So deciding whether using exercise for weight loss is a good idea, can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. There are different ideas out there when it comes to what type of exercise is best. For example, some say that weight bearing exercise such as jogging or walking, is best &#8211; while other activities like swimming or cycling may not be so effective.</p>
<p>Many people find that they embark on an exercise program, only to find that the vision of losing those unwanted pounds in a week soon evaporates.</p>
<p>So here we want to explore what the truth is behind exercise and weight loss and understand how you can accurately calculate the amount of calories that different activties will lose for you.</p>
<p>One popular belief, is that burning a pound of fat takes 3,500 calories worth of exercise and since walking one mile burns 100 calories, you would therfore lose one pound for every 35 miles you walk. This would mean that if you walk 5 miles per day, you would achieve your target of 35 miles per week and would eliminate your one pound of fat.</p>
<p>However, the above calculation does not take into account the number of calories a person would lose from simply sitting still, or in other words, &#8220;being alive&#8221; for that one week.</p>
<p>Recent studies have shown that there are a number of exercise factors that influence weight loss. For example, walking at 3.5 mph would use up 54 calories, whereas jogging or running at mph would burn 107 calories. So running uses nearly twice the calories as walking, over the same distance.</p>
<p>Now, if you walk on a treadmill at home, this reduces the number of calories you burn by about 10 to 15 percent to what the machine claims you&#8217;re burning. Nevertheless, there are other advantages, including less impact on the musculoskeletal system and the convenience of exercising indoors, whatever the weather conditions.</p>
<p>Other factors that influence the amount of fat your burn are how long you exercise for and how intense it is. The bottom line is, that if you work out harder and for a longer period, you will burn more fat.</p>
<p>Activities that resist gravity such as running, dancing or even climbing stairs, use more calories than swimming or cycling. This is because the more muscle groups you use in your exericse, the more fat you will burn. So you want a form of exericse that uses as many muscles in your body as possible at one time.</p>
<p>If you choose muscle building resistance exercises using weights or machines, you may lose fewer pounds than you would from running, but you will be stronger and better toned. Greater muscle mass increases your basic metabolic rate and you will burn more calories, even when you&#8217;re doing nothing.</p>
<p>Finally, there are some factors you might have no control over. Some people are simply born with higher metabolic rates and produce a higher level of fat burning enzymes than others. Gender is also a consideration. Women, for example, find it more difficult to eliminate abdominal fat than men do, but around the belly is where men tend to put it on first of all.</p>
